What Is A CLEW?
CLEW Manual

What exactly is a CLEW and how does it differ from HOBY?

CLEW stands for Community Leadership Eduacation Workshop. Instead of a three day seminar, a CLEW lasts for one day. Also a CLEW is open to all high school sophomores, not just one, at no cost to the student or school. Financing for CLEWs comes from donations from service organizations, local businesses, community volunteers, and private individuals. Like HOBY, Alumni are more than welcome to work and plan for the CLEW.

The purpose of a CLEW is to have young people interact with recognized leaders in business, education, the arts, government and the professions, in order to gain a better understanding of the problems, frustrations, challanges and rewards that exist in today's world. It provides students with a different outlook on life, an outlook that is filled with positive energy, which in turn, gives these students a great deal of confidence. They learn that they can accomplish anything with a positive mental attitude, determitation, and enthusiasm.

A CLEW usually contains two or three sessions, one or two motivational speakers, ice breakers, lunch, other activities like games, and a review of the days events and feedback from the ambassodars. Sessions usually include a panel of speakers. Each speaker has 5 minutes to address the group. After all the speakers give their presentations, the floor is open for a 35 minute Q&A session, allowing the students to interact with the panelists. Following the Q&A session, students are divided into small groups to allow further discussion of the topic at hand. At this time, the panel speakers tour each group to answer further questions. The ambassodars may also quiz each other.

A CLEW is an enriching experiance. Not only will the HOBY ambassodar be prepared for what the seminar will like, he or she will share the friendships made, the morals and values learned, and a greater understanding of their community along with their schoolmates. It will not only be the CLEW participants who will learn from the CLEW, the Alumni will learn as well. They will get to work with each other and use their leadership skills to plan a CLEW and I need another reason, I have it but I don't know how to describe it...help me! =D
